This bandana uses two log marks the Garth Lumber Company registered in Delta County, Michigan. Both marks were registered in 1894. The company's president, John Garth, lived in Hannibal, Missouri. He was a boyhood friend of Samuel Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, and the two remained friends throughout their lives. In 1892, Garth bought the mill at the mouth of the Whitefish river from the Peacock family, and what had been known as Peacock Point was renamed Garth. At one time, the mill employed 118 people. Like many mills, the combination of a devastating fire and a diminishing stock of timber resulted in the permanent closing of the mill.
